Antenatal Class @ Columbia Asia Hospital, Puchong

Date : 20th May 2012
Location : Columbia Asia, Puchong

The rite of passage for all parents-to-be.....the antenatal class.  Supposed to prepare us for all the uncertainties of child birth and parenthood.

Quite honestly me and wifey were expecting more from this class.  After being told by our respective friends on how important and useful this class could be, we went with rather high hopes.  I would not say we wre dissappointed, but perhaps underwhelmed would be the more appropriate word.

The session began with the Consultant O&G, Dr Ng SP (our gynae!) giving a talk which could easily be titled as "What To Expect When You're Delivering".   By keeping the presentation concise and simple and given the high probability of him being the one to facilitate most of participants' delivery, it was no surprise he held the class in rapt attention.  The phrase that stuck to me from his presentation was "The most dangerous journey man has to undertake is the journey of birth"!

The next speaker, Consultant Pediatrician, Dr Florence Lok sounded like she'd rather be somewhere else that Sunday morning.....She breezed through her presentation in less than 15 mins!  The speaker after her, Dr Noor Asilah (Consultant Anethetist) turned her session in to a rather elaborate endorsement and promotion of the epidural method.  Not really convinced with her arguments, but then again in the labour room, anything could happen, right?  It has to be another option to have.

The hallmark of all antenatal class - the exercise and breathing method for expectant mothers were introduced by the Physiotherapist, Ms Lee.  Hoo-hoo-ha....hoo-hoo-ha..... Her cheerful nature quickly warmed herself to the class and both me and Cheryl enjoyed the peculiar exercise routines too!   The last session was by Midwife, Ms Tan who gave us  some really informative motherly advice from her own experience - especially on how to breastfeed and bath a newborn.  I had to agree with Cheryl that this session was perhaps the most useful of all.   To wrap it all up, she brought us all to visit the labour and delivery room - to prepare us for the eventual D Day and to view the cute babies in the newborn room.

Like mentioned earlier, we were expecting more from this class, never the less it was a day well spent on educating and preparing ourselves for the eventual day (and thereafter).  We could see the rest of participants were rather nervous/excited/anticipating as well, so perhaps me and Cheryl are not alone in feeling this way.  Having said that, the class went a long way in arresting some of our fears.

Tiger cub - Wishing you a safe journey ahead!

Event Report : PJ Dawn 2012

It has now been more than 17 hours since the end of my race in PJ Dawn and I still can't get no sleep.  Still feeling the adrenaline rush perhaps?

The event

I have to admit I'm pretty new to the running scene in Malaysia, this being only my fourth race so far.  Having said that, I would like to point out that I enjoyed this event the most as compared to the rest.  From registration, publicity to communication to race pack collection right down to race day arrangements, one could sense that the organizer went out of their way to ensure a smooth running of the event.  For instance, one of the perennial problem faced by by any local event organizers is parking and ensuring a proper control of the traffic flow in and out of the event venue.  A measure of how this organizer managed to get things right was when I arrived like 5mins before the half marathon flag off, yet parking was a hassle-free exercise and there was no jam at all!   I know perhaps the choice of location might have a bearing on that - never the less kudos to Outbox Productions & Pacesetters Athletics Club Malaysia for making this a truly enjoyable and memorable event for the runners.  Most of the runnners I'd met there or on Facebook has nothing but positive comments about the organization of this race.

My race

Now I'd signed up for the 12km race (there were only 2 categories, the other being the half marathon, which brings me to the only grouse - having to wait another hour after the start of that race; wait...the so called breakfast was also "minimalistic".....).  I've also come to realize this week that I've reached a Catch-22 situation where I'm making a conscious effort not to over train - meaning not to run too far and too often as I have to participate in a number of races since last month (8 in 2 1/2 months).  However by not training often enough (as I need to conserve energy for the actual races), my furthest distance had been stuck at 13km since 3 weeks ago.  The target on my Dailymile profile reads "to run 15km by May 2012, Half Marathon by Nov 2012 and Full Marathon in 2013"; sure I've still got time to fulfill that but the point is perhaps I should have been more selective in the races I enter, in order not to jeopardize my own training plan.  Will make a mental note to self on this now.

Other than that I've got very little to say about this race other than it was a good race personally for me, which also happened to be my inaugural night race.  My Polar distance reader calculated the distance as 12.47km and I managed to finished the race in 1:16:36, which was within my target of below 80 mins but slightly above my stretch taget of 75 mins.  I even managed to stay within the pace of 5:50m/km for the first 6km before slowing down to 6:00 - 6.10m/km in the final 3-4km.  The fact the roads involved are mostly closed or diverted during the race made it easier for us runners to just concentrate on the race.  Lighting was not an issue except for certain stretch near Ara Damansara where perhaps more marshall should have been stationed.  The fact that the route was pretty much flat from start to finish was a blessing and most of the fast runners would have appreciated this.

I felt much better after this race than the last 2 races, and will have no qualms participating again next year.  Putrajaya will be the venue next year - I can already foresee that traffic is not an issue, but let's wait and and hear from the organizers.

Here are some snapshots of the race:

Larian TC Kuantan 2012 (2nd September 2012)

Kuantan is one of my favourite local city and having stayed there for 4 years due to work commitments, I have fond memories of its' lush greenery, scenic and wonderfully clean beaches and one of the thing I miss incredibly from Kuantan is its' relatively jam-free roads (except for Jalan Besar & Teluk Sissek on Fridays).  Apparently Larian TC (TC stands for Teluk Cempedak) Kuantan 2012 to be held on 2nd September 2012 (Time 7:15am) is an annual event organized by Pacesetters Athletics Club in collaboration with DiGi.

Looking at the route map for the 10km run, the runners will pass by the green lungs along Jalan Tengku Mahmud before finishing with the steady but manageable incline towards the Teluk Cempedak beach.

The are quite a number of categories available for participants to choose from and there will be fun run (6km) categories as well.  For further details, please visit themarathonshop link here:

Event Report: Larian Bersama Bomba kali ke-10 / Bomba Run 10K

First thing first.

This so called 10K run was a misnomer.  Last check with other runners, most of them clogged in the distance of at more than 10.8km, my GPS map showed it was at least 10.97km, so this was actually closer to a 11K run rather than a 10K run.

2nd observation - the venue.

After all the commotion the previous week where absolutely nobody was allowed to breach the barbed fencing, (hell no, just being in the vicinity could get you tear-gassed, bludgeoned and arrested - "Welcome to Tel Aviv"....)  ironically everybody just sauntered in to Dataran Merdeka that Sunday morning.  Even the traffic cops were kinda friendly that day, doing what they were supposed to be doing all this while - directing traffic.  They even let some of the runners got away with simply parking their vehicles beside the Dataran (in front of the Bar Council building) - something which was unthinkable a week ago.  To top it all off, many runners turn up in the not so fashionable "yellow" colour and they did not even got harassed.....How things have changed......Alas I digress.....let us get to the main point - the race itself.

The race:

This race was organized by the Federal Territory Fire Department in conjunction with World Firefighter Day which was on...I forgot the date.  This was my first time participating and I'd heard during the kit collection day that the response was pretty good at close to 10,000 runners.  A friend forewarned me that the Bkt Tunku & Jln Duta stretch would not be easy and so it proved.  Not offering any excuses here but I came in to this run still suffering from a bout of flu - in fact the night before I was still on medication.  Plus the fact that I did not really train on err...slightly elevated inclination, I was actually expecting the worst prior to the start of this race.  The sight of so many runners (whom I think was better prepared than me) during the warm up did not help matters.

During the first 10-15 minutes, I was actually feeling kinda good as we approached the Bkt Tunku (hill).  The lush scenery (one of the few remaining green lungs right smack in the KL city centre) coupled with the relatively bearable morning sun made for a rather comfortable start.  I was doing my normal pace at 6:20-6:30/km until I was almost up the hill when suddenly I could sense some problem in maintaining my regular breathing pattern; as the nose block returned with a vengeance.  That was when things took a turn for the worse when I began to gradually and completely loose  my rhythm and pace.  Tried to pace along with 2 serious looking girls less than 3m in front of me but they were soon out of sight in less than 5 mins.  By the time, I got to the 5km mark (I guess, there were no distance markers) which was also the location of the first water station, I could feel my body was demanding me to stop as the breathing became truly erratic and I was literally gasping for air.  At the same time, I could feel some strain on my right thigh as well - perhaps one of the after effects of the flu medicine.  Defying all that, I pushed on for another few hundred meters or so but then came that long steady increasing elevation near the Jalan Duta National Hockey stadium (if I'm not mistaken) where I finally gave up and began walking.  I walked for close to 3 minutes, all the time telling (no, more like reciting to) myself - I have to finish this within the stipulated time (80 mins) and I would not finish if I'm walking like this!  However it was a physical and mental struggle - try to imagine the disappointment when you couldn't even outran an old lady (experienced runner never the less, she came with a 30km Pacesetter vest!) who zoomed past me around the 8/9km mark.

Turning to the final km near the Jalan Parlimen/Tugu Negara (National Monument) stretch, I was basically running on empty and I was half running, half walking.  At that very moment too, I was thinking to myself, what the hell, do you really want to WALK past the finishing line?  Taking into consideration the stipulated time will be over soon, I gave it a final push, even gently brushing aside a teenage boy whom was enjoying his stroll to the finishing line and clocked in at 1:13:46.  A poor time, way beyond the timing required for a Top 150 placing and medal list for the Men's Open Category!  If there is any consolation, I am safe in the knowledge that I would have finished in the Top 50 -  that is if I'd entered the Women's Open Category instead, LOL!!!

For an event organized by a government department, things ran pretty smoothly and kudos to the organizers for starting on time, at 7.30am sharp (yup, even the VVIP turned up on time this time).  Credit perhaps must also be extended to the FTAA for their successful collaboration with the firefighters in ensuring everything went well.  It was a good day to bring the family out too to enjoy the sights and sounds - I've got Cheryl (and tiger cub), plus mother and mum to support and encouraged me to the finishing line. Truly a marked contrast from the week before.  There were some demos by the firefighters around the square but I was too hungry and tired to bother so it was straight to the breakfast for me.

In conclusion I should have done better but given the circumstances, that was the best that I could do.  I just have to make do by redeeming myself in the next run - PJ Dawn 2012.
